WHY TO CHOOSE KARNALI ACADEMY OF HEALTH SCIENCES
Karnali Academy of Health Science(KAHS), JUMLA
Not a lot of people know about Jumla and its academics here, this post is going to be a little long so if you are not interested kindly just skip it instead of creating havoc in the comments.
Transportation:
The main concern regarding Jumla is transportation part so let's just get it over with. There are 2 ways of coming here via bus or by plane. Plane flies from either nepalgunj or surkhet(not sure if surkhet one still works) and no there are no direct planes available from ktm - jumla. The plane route is unsure as the weather keeps on changing and it just keeps getting cancelled but it is the most comfortable way for travelling here. As for the route via bus, a bus daily travels from ktm - jumla at around 1 pm and it takes about 2 days to reach here (you reach jumla day after tomorrow after getting into the bus and it stops twice; once before reaching nepalgunj and one just before reaching jumla as vehicles are not allowed to pass kalikot after night). From nepalgunj it takes about 12-16 hrs(depends if the road is fine and not blocked by any trucks). You can ask further information at the gangabu buspark and also we can give you more details about it after you are sure to come here.
Academics:
There is kind of a mixed syallabus from every university of nepal. PBL, community learning sabai xa yeha. Community health science is given a lot of priority here and there is a vast syallabus for community medicine. Academics is not compromised at all. Professor's and assistant professor's are great and class is very interactive involving both students and teachers as there are only 20 of us (now 30). Everyone is supervised and are encouraged to do better (definitely not like other medical college which is a huge plus point).
Labs were not fully established when we came here but now it is good(Especially the anatomy lab). Lab's are small but i think sufficient for this amount of students. Schedule is from 9-5pm, sunday-friday (can be changed due to current announcement from government). Classes are regular and are not left unsupervised. As it is a government college, no extra fees are demanded. Oh and don't expect too much from library here. It is still under development and a lot of books are yet to come. More details will be provided later.
DRESS CODE - cream shirt, black pant, black jacket/coat, maroon sweater
Environment:
It is pretty good and if you are a person who loves to live in the hilly region you will throughly enjoy here. Environment is cold though. Very very cold. Still today we are compelled to sleep with a warm, bulky blanket with us. But during the day time it gets pretty hot as sun shines the brightest. Any kind of pollution is not seen untill you go near the buspark area. It is a little expensive here as it takes a long time/money to import goods here but not as much as people think (eg. For a jacket if it costs 2500 in ktm, a maximum of rs. 3000 is demanded here) sano tino kura haru chai ustai ustai vau hunxa tei 10-50 rupees mahango matra hola. You don't interact with a lot of people aside from hospital but as i have seen and felt, people are very kind and welcoming towards us so nothing to worry in that department. There are not a lot of visiting places here aside from climbing hills and going to open fields. Many hotels, motels are available here so lunch won't be a problem at all. 2-3 cafes are also here in case you want to celebrate birthdays or any other things(tara last mahango xa yr. ktm ma 50 ma pauni pastry normally 100 ma painxa yeha tara kunai kunai ma euta pastry kai 200 magdinxa). Books are not available here and samikshya also doesnot supply here so you have to carry it yourself. Copies are also not of any great qualities but it can get the work done.
Hostel:
3.5k - no attached bathroom
4k - attached bathroom
5k - mesh (lunch excluded)
In conclusion;
Plus points:
- Great environment
- Balanced and well managed academics
- No extra fees
- Exam pattern has MCQ'S, PBQ'S so will develop a skill to take mcq's. Will help a lot during your PG entrance
- Good teacher student interactions
- Clinical exposure since 1st year (Patan ma bahek aruma 3rd year bata lagxan)
- Great community level studies
- Well behaved and helping seniors
- No ragging (can't believe it is one of the most important characteristic feature of a medical clg)
Drawbacks:
- Travelling here is always a hassle.
- Main problem is electricity and internet. Data from only ntc sim works here so please carry one with you. Wi-fi doesn't work as fast as you are using one at your home. (15mbps vanera jodyo 1-2mbps matra pugxa maximum)
Electricity is never certain, sometimes it doesnot come for 3-4 days. Solar is used a lot in this area but the current boys hostel doesn't have a reliable one(sano tuki type batti matra balxa). There was also a water issue in the boys hostel which has been solved.
Girl's hostel has a lot of their problems solved so we are hoping our problems to be solved before the new batch arrives. There is also a word of changing our hostel which will solve a lot of issues but for now it is not that great.but hostel rooms are lot better than you expect.
- Sometimes, even the sim card doesnot work, so you can go contactless for some time from your family. (This type of situation usually arise once or twice a year so it is actually not a drawback but just a remainder)
- Library is still in development.
- *Only for boys* Nani haru dherai herna paidaina
Even after having some drawbacks it is very good clg in a very sound environment. It is just the 2nd batch now and it is improving in its own pace. It will not be long before it becomes a dream clg of many aspirants. Us seniors are desperately waiting for you guys to come as we have not been exposed to people outside jumla after coming here and we are pretty much hungry for interaction with other people almost same as our age.
There will be no ragging here just some small introduction session. (dharan wala introduction haina hai feri)
*Jumla is far beyond your expectations, even we were surprised by how a medical college this good was able to be established in karnali province. So don't be afraid of coming here you will have a great time.*
We whole-heartedly welcome you to JUMLA
Sincerely,
Mbbs 1st batch
